An amazing structural wisdom and evolutionary intelligence resides in our bodies. Often times, however, we spend much of our time and energy in our heads, losing the valuable wisdom our bodies relay to us. Somatic psychotherapy examines the entire being of a person, including the mind/body/spirit connection. By allowing our body's wisdom to gently guide our mind towards nourishment, comfort and healing, we can re-connect with our 'humanness' and ultimately our connection to others.

This basic language of sensations, that is getting to know what parts of your body are hot or cold, numb or alive, cut-off or felt, tingly or racing are very effective in discovering what your inner world is telling you about the present moment and gently informs you of your way in the world. Since we are malleable, our moods shift, body sensations change, and our somatic shape also changes. Learning to read these signals allows us to be more self referential: able to look to the inside for guidance instead of to the outside world in the present moment.

Somatic psychotherapy also includes doing experiential exercises in the session. This might be role-play exercises, experimenting with "taking on" the feeling you are experiencing, or participating in a structured or unstructured movement. Using our kinesthetic sense in these exercises assists in building our tools of discovery.

In order to heal, we need to learn to trust the messages our bodies are giving us. Fortunately, we have an automatic orientation towards resiliency. The more we can trust our bodies, nourishing those basic needs of safety and emotional integration, the less we have to do through conscious thought processing, allowing our bodies wisdom to assist in our healing.
